Compassion Doesn't Require Self-Abandonment

Bohemian Somatics Reflections & Rituals

Many of us grow up believing that being a caring person means always being available, always listening, always fixing, always rescuing.

Somewhere along the way, we begin to measure our kindness by how much of ourselves we're willing to give away, and by how much we can gain approval, acceptance, and love from others by doing the work. However, I've been reflecting myself if that's really compassion, or whether sometimes it's simply forgetting that our own wellbeing and lives matter too.

There comes a moment when we realise that supporting someone doesn't always mean solving their problems for them, sometimes it means listening, sometimes it means pointing them towards resources and support that can genuinely help them and, sometimes it means encouraging them to trust their own strength instead of relying on ours.

I want you to know that you are not withdrawing love, it's offering it differently.

For a long time I thought prioritising myself first, protecting my own energy meant that I was abandoning them, now I see it differently.

When we stop abandoning ourselves to carry everyone else, we create relationships built on mutual respect rather than dependence.

We can still care deeply, we can still be compassionate, but we no longer believe it's our responsibility to carry what someone else is capable of carrying themselves.

I believe that one of the greatest gifts we can offer another person isn't rescuing them, it's empowering them to believe that they're capable.

Sometimes believing in someone's strength is far more empowering than trying to become it for them, and perhaps that's true for ourselves as well.

A little reflection

Where in your life are you carrying something that was never yours to hold?

What might become possible if you offered support and resources without taking ownership?

Sometimes protecting your peace isn't creating distance, it's simply remembering that your energy deserves your care too.

Thank you for being here.

One of the things I enjoy most about writing these reflections is that they invite me to slow down and notice the lessons hidden within everyday life.

My hope is that, somewhere within these words, you find an idea, a question or a gentle reminder that stays with you long after you've finished reading.

If even one reflection helps you see your life a little differently, choose yourself a little more often, or reminds you of your own strength, then sharing them is always worthwhile.

Thank you for being part of this beautiful community.

With love,

Melissa xo

The Way You See Changes Everything Bohemian Somatics Hello gorgeous, I've been reflecting on something lately. Two people can experience the very same moment and walk away with completely different stories or perceptions. One person sees a setback, the other sees a redirection. One person notices what's missing, the other notices what's already here. One person sees an ending, the other sees the beginning of something new. The moment itself hasn't changed, the way it's been seen has. This...

Where you place your energy shapes your life. Hi Friends, I've been thinking about something recently. Every day we're invited to invest our energy somewhere. We can give it to what's missing, what's working, everything that's gone wrong, or everything that could go wrong. We can spend it worrying about the future or appreciating what's already here. What I've realised is that the more energy we give something, the more real it begins to feel. Not because the world around us has changed...

The life you're creating begins long before anyone else can see it.

Every beautiful life is created twice. First within. Then in the world. Hello Lovely, I've been thinking about something recently..... We spend so much of our lives looking for evidence that things are changing. More money. A different job. A new relationship. Another opportunity. A healthier body. A calmer mind. We wait for life to show us that something is different before we allow ourselves to believe it. But what if we've got it the other way around? What if the first place life begins to...
